Just received an ADHD diagnosis? What next?

Receiving an ADHD diagnosis can raise as many questions as it answers.

You may feel relieved to have an explanation for experiences you have found difficult. You may feel uncertain about what the diagnosis means or what support to explore. You might not know how you feel yet.

If you are wondering “I have an ADHD diagnosis what next.?”, you do not need to work everything out immediately. Start with the information and support most relevant to you.

1. Clarify your clinical next steps

Ask the service that assessed you to explain its recommendations and follow-up arrangements.

Useful questions include:

  • Can you explain anything in my assessment report that I do not understand?

  • What support or treatment options should I consider?

  • Who should I contact if I have further questions?

  • What happens next, and who is responsible for arranging it?

Keep a note of your questions so you do not have to remember them all during an appointment.

2. Give yourself time to understand the diagnosis

You may begin looking differently at past experiences in education, work or relationships.

There is no requirement to reach a particular conclusion or feel positive straight away. Choose reliable information and give yourself time to consider what is useful.

If you are experiencing distress or difficulties with your mental health, speak to your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.

3. Choose one everyday difficulty to focus on

You do not need to change every routine at once.

Consider which part of daily life you would most like support with. Perhaps appointments are difficult to track, work tasks feel overwhelming or household responsibilities keep building up.

A focused starting point might be:

  • Keeping appointments in one calendar.

  • Bringing scattered task lists together.

  • Preparing what you need for the following morning.

  • Breaking one outstanding task into smaller actions.

Choose something relevant and manageable rather than attempting a complete overhaul.

4. Explore support that fits your needs

Support after an ADHD diagnosis may involve several different people or services.

Your clinical team can discuss treatment. Workplace or education support may help you explore adjustments. Peer support can offer opportunities to hear from others.

ADHD coaching provides a separate space to explore practical goals, strategies and everyday challenges.

You can use the questions raised by your diagnosis to identify what you would like help with, while recognising that different needs require different kinds of support.

Where does coaching fit after an ADHD diagnosis?

In my coaching sessions, we begin by discussing your challenges and what you would like to gain.

We agree goals together, explore practical strategies and review progress at the start of each subsequent session. The number of sessions varies according to your needs.

For example, if organisation feels overwhelming, we might begin by reviewing your current commitments and deciding which needs attention first.

Finding post-diagnosis ADHD support

I offer non-clinical coaching for adults in Manchester, with in-person and online options.

If you are exploring practical support after an ADHD diagnosis, you can complete my enquiry form, email me or contact me through social media. We can discuss what you are looking for and whether coaching is a suitable fit.

You can also read about my coaching packages. A diagnosis is not required to enquire about coaching. My services do not include clinical assessment, prescribing or medical treatment.
